Android 5.0 Lollipop expands Bluetooth Low Energy support beyond scanning for nearby devices. Apps can now use advertising to broadcast signals from supported hardware.
For beacon applications, this makes it possible for a compatible Android device to send a signal that another device can detect. Our pharos Android app offers a way to explore this broadcasting capability.
The Android version alone does not guarantee that broadcasting is available. The device’s Bluetooth hardware and software must support advertising. A device that can detect beacons is not necessarily able to transmit them.
